Instagram photo sizes and aspect ratios: 4:5, 1:1 and 9:16

The shapes

• 1:1 (1080 × 1080 px): the classic square.
• 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px): tall, takes up the most space in the feed, popular for portraits.
• 3:4 (1080 × 1440 px): a newer tall shape that some feeds and profile grids show.
• 9:16 (1080 × 1920 px): full screen, used for Stories and Reels.
• 1.91:1 (1080 × 566 px): wide landscape.

Instagram changes how it shows posts from time to time, so check what your own profile grid shows before you decide.

Keep the important part in the middle

Grids, previews and buttons can hide the edges of a picture. Keep faces, text and logos away from the outer edges, and away from the very top and bottom of tall images. For 9:16, leave room at the bottom for captions and buttons.

Crop in Shutterlune

1. Open Shutterlune and add your photo.
2. Choose Move photo, then drag to reposition and pinch or scroll to zoom.
3. Pick a crop shape for the ratio you want, such as 4:5 or 9:16.
4. Add a frame with your camera settings and download it.

Tips

• Use the same ratio for every image in a carousel so it does not jump.
• Start from a large original. Export at the resolution you need rather than upscaling a small image.
